Steam Heat Main Vent Valves
The main vent valves on my 80 year old steam heating system have 1/8″ fitting and nead replacement. Are there any valves comparabable to a Gorton 1 or 2 with an 1/8 fitting?

minimize the air resistance… tap a bigger hole and get rid of the air more quickly
The placement of those vents allows the steam to get to that end of the main quicker by venting the air ahead of it thus giving the steam room to expand with less resistance. If your system was design with the vents as they are and you haven’t made any major changes to it, then replacing the 1/8″ vents in kind would probably be fine. These should be quick vents.

SteamMan – No, not on the radiators. There are 4 vents that are over 40 years old on the basement pipes leading to the radiators. The present valves have a 1/8 fitting. I was thinking that replacement may help with the heating.
When e-man says back he is talking about up…15″ above the elbow on the main.
Silly question
Are you trying to put a Gorton #1 on a radiator? I hope not…

you could put a d vent gorton, but it would behoove you to drill and tap a 3/4 takeoff fifteen inches back from the riser so that you get the correct air release from the main
