spray foam around steam risers?
any harm or benefit to using that spray foam (i.e. really great stuff) into the space where the steam risers come out of the floor or into the space where they extend into the ceiling? really just looking to seal those spaces up, does using this stuff make sense?

Firestopping is much better and you can find the exact product for your needs. I would check Hilti or 3M’s websites for more information. Steam pipes get incredibly hot…so you don’t want to use anything that may catch fire without you knowing.
technically you should use firestopper caulking. The old school approach would be stuffing holes with steel wool sponges.
I used Great Stuff around mine because the holes were rather large and it worked well. Let it dry overnight and then cut the excess off with a utility knife.
You can do it. It helps slow down mice and bugs. You can then cut and sand it. The hardware store sells metal rings that will dress the area more cleanly.
Your better off using fire proof caulking to close those holes
