We just moved into a recently renovated brownstone in which the owner used oil-based high temperature paint to cover the hot water radiators. When the heat comes on, there is an oily/burning smell that comes off them. Not terribly strong, but persistent even though the heat has come on a few times already.

Is this just out-gassing that will dissipate eventually? Should we be concerned?

Is there a sealant or something we can use to ensure there are no harmful VOCs going into the air?

  1. We have a similar issue with a small, new radiator that was installed earlier this year, replacing an older one. It’s definitely the sealant, and the awful burning smell is lingering. Our problem: it’s in our 8-month old baby’s room and we are wondering if the odor could be harmful to him. The heating just went on today which is when the smell started. Does anyone have any idea whether these sealants could be toxic?

    Thank you.

  2. Really stinks, doesn’t it.

I was told it was not harmful. We cranked the heat a few times while we were out of the house and opened the windows. As I recall it was gone before long…a week?
