Hello All:

National Grid has started to offer wireless meter reading so that no entry to the house is needed.

I was wondering if anyone has had experience with the service. It is $80 per device.

Thanks in advance to any information on your experience with this service.

Nick

  1. they charged me $70 not $80. it is simply a box replacing the plastic dial box on the existing meter. they did not have to disconnect meter so whole procedure was pretty painless. I have pretty old meters, but it worked well.

  2. Depending on the age of existing meters, most AMR’s are retrofits. We had these installed approx. 6 months ago. Works fine; results in monthly bills based on actual rather than estimated readings.

  3. Brooklyn Union Gas installed something like [or, at least, functionally similar to] this on my meter about 25–30 years ago and National Grid still uses it to get my readings. I thought everyone had this.

  4. If you have a fairly new meter, they may install this at no cost. I had one out of three this way.
Now, if Con-Ed would follow suit….
