Kitchen Smoke Barrier
I’m remodeling my apt and was told that since my kitchen is not near a window I’d have to have a smoke barrier for the kitchen. Can anyone tell me how far it needs to be from the actual range and how low does it have to be? I’d like to keep it as unobtrusive…

12″ drop is required for a kitchenette only – if your apartment is a studio, you absolutely have a kitchenette and you have to have the drop arch.
You might have a “superkitchen” which derives from a now archaic zoning term where the living room and the kitchen are a single room with a window sized to accomodate the combined space. If this is the case, no drop arch is required.
As with all multiple dwellings, to understand the requirements you must know the mdl classification and the date of that classification. Seemingly similar buildings may have widely varying rules.
