Hi friends,

We are getting a washer dryer and don’t know which is preferable, gas or electric dryers. Any advice, strong opinions?

Thanks,

  1. There are some self venting devices u can buy. Obviously, venting out of the building is best, but in a pinch they do work. If your wash and dry area is well of the beaten path, than a self venting device is really not a problem and depending on the volume of clothes, you don’t have to change the filter (or refill the bucket in some devices) only every so often. Gas is definitely hotter and cheaper in the long and short run

  2. We don’t have the vent, the gas line, or the 220 hook up.

Either way we have to do a little work, but the vent won’t have to run far to reach a window.

I’m getting prices from the plumber on hooking up the gas line and an electrician on installing a 220 outlet. I’ll weigh it all together with the advice you guys have given.

    Thanks!

  3. rawlesaw, a gas dryer runs 1/3 the cost of an electric, approx 25c vs 75c per load. Price fluctuation of gas won’t make much of a difference.

edison, do you have a vent? and a gas line? Then go gas. Without a vent, check into a condensation dryer, 220v is quite good and about 50c/load. Take you a long time to recoup the cost of a vent install.

  4. i’m not 100% sure a gas dryer is that much cheaper to operate. you’d have to be doing quite a bit of laundry to notice that big of a difference. also i’m sure it would vary when gas prices fluctuate as well.

  5. I put in an electric dryer because I know how to add a 240 line but not how to cut a gas line. I kind of regret it – it’s murderous on my electric bills.

  6. When possible always chose gas. Electric is only used when gas is not possible. Also even electric has to be vented for moisture and lint.

  7. The gas dryer will cost a little more than the equivalent electric dryer of the same model but it will be cheaper to run. If the hookups and venting is there gas would be a better choice.

  8. Used to have an electric dryer and it took well over an hour to dry a load of laundry. Changed to gas dryer to get it done much quicker. Gas and electric prices vary but you almost always save with gas. If you can get gas to where the dryer is and can vent it, go with a gas dryer.
