Gas Fireplace
Winter is coming and we are considering to have an old dream come true this year – have a fireplace in the living room. We would probably go with a gas fireplace. We would probably go with a gas fireplace. Does anyone know what would be the price range for a not-so-fancy gas fireplace? Any recommendations for an installer? We hope installation won’t cost that much as the gas runs just below the future-fireplace spot (in the basement).
You might consider the easy route…. The EcoSmart Fireplace.

I got an email from them recently that mentioned that in 2010, you’re eligible for a tax credit for an efficient heater AND they offer designer discounts. So if you hook yourself up with a designer and you buy it this year (which you could even if you’re not ready to install it), you’re golden. You can work it into any design scheme. (See the pics on their site.)
I’m a designer, and we did one on a job a few years ago as a last minute addition to the plan, and in an unusual location – see http://www.elledecor.com/decorating/articles/daring_downsize
I think it worked out pretty well. These units can be expensive, but with the tax credit and the possible simplification of the job, it may be a contender. And no venting necessary.
