Shower Retiling
Hey guys and gals, Does anyone have any experience with re-tiling a shower? I’m not talking about just re-grouting, but with actually taking down the tiles and sheetrock and replacing entirely. Costs, contractors, etc? Thanks!

Hello jessie,
try Dan he is very reasonable and reliable he does all work himself and offers free estimates he can be reached at 718 485-1044.
Awesome, great info – thank you Laurie
BTW – we were only shower-less for 2 days. The job was pretty much completed in a day and a half, and we installed new tub and shower fixtures at the same time + re-grouted the existing tiled floor. Everything has worked well and looked great ever since 🙂 I’ve recommended Rob Mara here before. He can sometimes be tough to reach initially, but he’s always been reliable for us. We re-tiled our tub/shower wall surround a few years ago as part of a minor cosmetic reno. We demo’d to the bare beams, put up new Durock and new tiles. If memory serves, we spent about $900 total on that portion, including the demo, disposal, all the materials (except the tile itself) and labor (done by Rob Mara). Our tile was about $7/sf from Cancos (lovely 5″x13″ high-gloss ceramic subway-style tiles). Hope this helps!
Thank you Kensingtonian!
jesse, call my guy Oleg 347-583-0523. What UW said is about right but might add some expense (time) if floors/walls are cement and lots of debris.
Oleg gives very reasonable rates and works himself so no contract coordination overhead expenses. He is a very good tiler, amongst other thing.
Thanks UW! The rotted wood part is what I’m worried about, to be honest, plus the fact that I’d be without a shower for a few days. Having never done this type of work I’m leaning towards hiring someone. Thanks!
Your costs are going to vary very widely depending on what tiles you pick. I did my shower myself, so I don’t know about contractors. I’m going to assume here that you’re not going to find any rotted wood or anything like that when you open up the walls.
Demolition: 1/2 day labor (somewhere between $100 and $200/day depending on who you get)
Disposal of debris: $350 (unless you can bag it up properly and put it out in stages with your regular trash)
new Durock: $200-ish, depending on square footage
Installation of Durock: 1/4-1/2 day labor, depending on how good your person is
Tile – can be $1.50/sf, can be $400/sf.
Tile installation – 1 day labor to install tile, assuming it’s basic. Mortar has to dry. A few hours labor to grout it. Grout has to dry. Less than an hour to caulk it.
This all varies depending on whether it’s a small shower stall, or a bathtub with a tiled apron.
Your contractor will charge overhead for project coordination, insurance, expertise, etc.
