We own a one family in Cobble Hill and have just opened the stairs down to the garden apartment. I am trying to find some spindles that match the other stairs, along with a handrail and newel post. I would love for them to match and am not interested in finding something from Home Depot/Lowe’s. We are new to the area–does anyone have any suggestions on a good architectural salvage spot in the area that might have something for us–anyone have anything in their basement? It’s probably 12-15 spindles (that can be painted) and a small newel post. Thank you in advance…

  1. you just need someone who turns wood and has a “copy lathe” or “lathe duplicator”. google “brooklyn wood turning” etc, or better yet, check the advertisers.

  2. Vaccarro’s Ironworks, or Old New York Iron as he is now calling it has spindles that I’m pretty sure are an exact match to what you are showing, I just saw them today. Unfortunately, they are heavily painted, so you’ll be looking at some stripping. He’s the salvage guy that’s located right outside of Lowe’s parking lot on 9th street, between Smith and 2nd Ave., right by the sand and stone place.
He also had a few railings and newel posts, but as UnprotectedWrecks points out, with salvage, it’s always hit or miss finding what you need. Bring a spindle with you if you can, spindles can look the same until held up directly against the original when you see it doesn’t really match, and he doesn’t take returns.

  3. Eddie’s Salvage on Greene often has these. But it’s hit or miss. You can also bring one to Ace Woodworking in Bushwick and have copies custom-turned.
