A local window supplier told us he was able to get Landmarks permission to use aluminum clad .
We didn’t use an expediter as this supplier did our drawings and has done lots of landmark work.
We spent the summer months waiting for approval that we didn’t get. He now says Landmarks only approves clad for 1 over 1’s.
Does anyone have experience with wood vs clad for landmarked houses?
Thanks

Global warming is also a myth, don’t you think?
You must be working for the LPC 🙂
Wood is beautiful no doubt! But I recommend you google “passive house” and find out about what has changed in the last century in windows, insulation and building materials.
Saving energy, and reducing pollution are clearly more important than keep on using the same materials, when these houses were built.
New does not mean ugly either… We do not live the same way, as we did 100 years ago. Things change; and LPC and DOB should hire people who are informed about these changes, use common sense and implement them; instead of following the “rules” all the time.
Until then, you must file with LPC and get approval before you move forward with your window choice. An architect will not be able to help you. Most expediters will take your money gladly, and give you wishy washy answers. What you need is an LPC consultant. Try Roxanne Ryce-Paul 347-610-2742, RRP@ecoecous.com. I heard great things about her. She has worked at the LPC for years and now she is a consultant. I will hire her for the same exact problem, in the next few weeks. Not sure if she would want to get hired by an owner, as she works with Architects only. But it is worth the try. Good luck.
It is a myth that replacement windows are better than original wood windows. Replacements won’t have as much glass and light, and if they are wood, the wood will be inferior. Original wood windows can last hundreds of years if properly maintained. With the right glazing, caulking, painting, etc., and storm windows, they will be more energy efficient and keep more sound out than any new window. And of course they’ll look beautiful.
What would happen?
Yes, they would make you replace them. They will do so by putting a landmarks violation on your house that will prevent you from selling or possibly refinancing….until it’s cleared.
Even if some neighbor doesn’t complain, eventually someone on your block trying to get permission for something not conforming will ask why they can’t if you did, and suddenly everyone is looking at your house, may 10 or 15 years later, and bingo, then you’ll have a violation. Yes it does happen.
What would happen?
Your next door neighbor whom you probably say hello to everyday will drop a dime on you in two seconds. They will catch you before your windows are even in.
What would happen if you just got whatever windows you wanted, would they make you rip them out???
Or why doesn’t the landmarks have a list of the types of windows that you can choose from, that would make everyone’s life easier….

Seriously:
We burn $10k + worth of time and effort every time a homeowner wants to replace a technologically inferior window with an energy efficient and easy-to-clean modern window???
And we pay people to make these determinations?
Time to leash landmarks…
They only allow clad windows for houses with one-over-one windows and they insist the wood trim remain, so you will need to continue painting the trim. Six-over-six replacements have to be wood although lately they have allowed tilt and turn that just appear to be six-over-six. You can’t figure it out. I think it is a matter of how the doves fly once the are released from the sacred temple.
