We have a beautiful antique bed that’s less than a full size bed.

I guess this is normal, beds used to be smaller. It’s in a guest bedroom, but it’s really too small for two people especially if one of them is 6′ tall male or larger.

Rather than replace, I’m wondering if there’s a way to alter this bed so it can fit a standard queen size mattress.

anyone know about this?

ever have in done in NYC/brooklyn?

thanks all

  1. I’m in the same position. My antique iron bed is a proper full size, but we want to expand it to a queen – have you had any luck? Ive contacted a number of iron workers but no responses yet. Im asking them to expand each side bar by about 5/6 inches and add 4 side squares (one at each end of both bars)with a small rim to support the extra width and keep the bed frame in place.

  2. How much do you love the headboard? Because hiring a quality woodworker/furniture maker to alter your bed is going to cost more money than buying a new queen bed (or at least an equal amount of money). If you love it and want to go through with the project look at the directory and classified ads on this site for furniture makers and woodworkers.

  3. Is it smaller than a full or smaller than a queen? Or is it a modern full size but you want to make it into a queen? There is bed frame extender hardware available but going from smaller than a full to a queen is a large jump and would mean both wider and longer. Another option would be to get a custom mattress made, and use sheets for the next-highest size.
