Woke up at 2am to the smell of smoke. After checking realized it was coming from outside. From the roof I saw the whole neighborhood seemed thick with smoke. There were certainly sirens. Found this great link but it still isn’t clear (Gowanus or smoke from Jersey)…

Anyone know what’s going on?

  1. That’s what that smell was? I’m in Carroll Gardens and I woke up sometime in the middle of the night smelling that and my windows were closed.

  2. I got a text message from OEM about it at 3:10am:

“There is a three alarm fire in Jersey City, New Jersey. As a result, Brooklyn residents may see or smell smoke.”

  3. The smoke smell woke me up at 3 a.m. in Cobble Hill and my husband and I went outside and walked around the neighborhood trying to locate the source. We couldn’t find any news online or on TV about the cause. Finally, I located a couple of online posts saying that the smoke was from a tire recycling facility in Jersey City, and we were able to return to bed around 4. Even this morning, there was nothing on the NY Times website or NYC.gov that I could locate. I found a very short, about four sentences, piece on Gothamist.com and much later there was a brief mention on NY1.
