Hey guys and gals,
With a little one crawling about, I need to put some sort of rug or carpeting over our hardwoor floors. Besides Home Depot and Lowes, does anyone have any local recommendations? I’m thinking about a 15ish foot hall runner and a low-lint 6x8ish rug for the living room. Our current faux persian rug sheds too much. Thanks!

  1. I always recommend Better Carpet Warehouse too. Much cheaper than ABC and they sell 100% wool carpet which is natural not toxic. You can get discounted all wool large remnants that easily work for making into runners or for small to medium size rooms. I had carpet cut to fit my son’s nursery so it looks wall-to-wall but it’s not fastened to the floor. The edges are finished all around and it has sound absorbing pad underneath. I think that’s so helpful if you have the LR or DR underneath your child’s room and actually want to entertain in the evening sometimes. Or watch TV.

  2. Check out Better Carpet Warehouse on Atlantic. We went there based on some good posts here and we not disappointed. Much more economical than ABC (though we didn’t make it to their warehouse), and much bigger selection than Ikea.

  3. >assumed we’d need carpeting/padding for safety reasons (for crawling knees, when they fall upon trying to walk, etc). Is that not the case

You’ve got to be kidding!! What do you think your kids are made of, glass? Kids grow up on concrete, tile and wood floors everywhere.

Carpet is awful, and toxic (read up on the hundreds of chemicals used in non-organic non-natural carpet). At the very least, pop for wool or sisal (oh but that would skin their knees, it’s rough…)

  4. I think you have a great point, Justmoved. My little guy would prob just end up still chewing the carpet corners anyway. Maybe we’ll try just the hardwood with some floor tiles. Thanks!

  5. yeah my daughter just had an area rug in her room to play on and the rest we had hardwood floors. once they start moving aroudn they don’t stay on the carpet anyway and it doesn’t see to bother them at all. when they were little i used to put them on a blanket and put cushions around them (when they just started to sit) to avoid them crashing down on the floor. once they mastered sitting and started crawling they were all over the place anyway. for the noise, it depends on your house obviously. how about you wait and ask your neighbors? possible that your so is stomping around during the day while they are at work so it’s not an issue.

  6. ABC has a carpet outlet in the Bronx, which I’ve heard has some good values. Dash & Albert rugs are very inexpensive and are carried by a lot of local shops, some of which will special order a rug for you from the web site and have it delivered to the store if receiving it is an issue.

  7. Ikea has the least expensive rugs of all sorts. I really like their Persian hand knotted wool ones that Bob mentions. We have a little 2×3 rug in the hall that is so pretty and cost $150. The really big ones (8×10) are about $900. Great bargain. But they have all kinds of rugs, including sisal types, for less than $100.

Dash & Albert makes beautiful cotton woven striped rugs at very reasonable prices.

I also love Madeleine Weinrub’s cotton rugs at ABC Carpet — a bit pricey though.

I have bought quite a few modern rugs on sale at West Elm. (You must be careful when vaccuuming though as they are loosely woven and will pull).

Family Heirloom Weavers in Pennsylvania makes gorgeous historically correct 19th-century style ingrain wool carpets. You can buy off the shelf or order custom. Custom is about the same price as the Weinrub carpets.

I saw an antique Persian rug I really liked at Linda Rosen Antiques in the Berkshires but it was $2,000 or $3,000 so haven’t sprung for that yet 🙂

Target and JC Penney might have something — they’re great for window shades.
