Monthly Parking?

Hey Forumers! My wife and I are considering a car — but wanted some input on parking: both street and monthly. We live on 15th street near the park. While there is street parking, it never seems abundant. So we’d like to consider a monthly parking arrangment — but it could be a little further out into Brooklyn, if that makes it cheaper (we’re on the F). Thoughts? Advice? Horror stories? Looking forward to hearing them all!
Get a used car and park on street (I bought a new car and park on the street but I don’t sweat the bumper dings)
exactly. A garage sounds great when you don’t have one, but once you do, it’s more of a pain than anything. You’ll be dropping things off at your house after a trip, spot a parking space nearby and say to yourself “why am I paying to park further away?”
yes insurance rates in Brooklyn are sky high. Buying a reliable used car to keep on the street is solid advice and a good starting point to bklyn car ownership. Give yourself at least one winter of digging the car out of snow plow drifts to jade you enough into splurging for an indoor garage space.

You can expect to pay around $150 for an outdoor space if you don’t mind parking a little further away from your apartment. It sounds like you’d be using the car primarily to run errands on weekends and get out of the city so if you don’t mind it not parking right nearby you can find cheaper parking if you’re flexible.
Definately considering this as well. I agree that it makes sense if you can find a spot within a short walk from your home.
I think the current issues with the MTA make it almost a no brainer to at least consider it. In terms of the ever increasing subway issues and rising cost, the incremental cost of owning a car starts looking very attractive.
Society can charge monthly maintenance charges for vehicle parking space.Incidentally, the space is not owned by the member. It is only allotted to him. The space is owned by the Society.

as a Brooklyn resident who has owned a car for 11 years both on the street and in a garage:
Parking your car outside of “walking distance” in a garage gets really old really quick. you will make a point NOT to use the car because it’s parked in an inconvenient location and it becomes a royal pain.
Parking on the street nearby, is obviously very convenient, but your car will get trashed quick as mentioned (unimportant to some folks) and you will have to work the alternate side parking chore into your weekly schedule.
My recommendation is to starting trolling CL for private garage spots in the south slope / WT area (walking distance). And by private I mean something like this listing:

When I first moved to Brookly, we had a two year old Volvo that looked new, a month later, I started calling it the battle wagon. Find a garage.
I am sure you have considered this, but what is the point of owning a car if you are going to garage it far from your house? Seems like a lot of carrying costs…
