Hi All,
I am getting in the spirit of autumn and would like to put some flower pots on our stoop and in the tree pit in front of our house. Last year we did mums in pots on the stoop, but nothing in the tree pit. Right now the tree pit has some lingering impatiens and withering hostas.
Any suggestions for fall flowers other than mums? (Soliciting suggestions for both the stoop and the tree pit.)
Also, should I dig out the impatiens and plant whatever fall annuals you recommend or just plant around them. They’re bound to die soon, but they’re still kicking at the moment.
Thanks!
Thanks all!
I forgot: Ivy is good in containers too. Some varieties are evergreen.
It’s too early for ornamental cabbage and kale – they prefer colder weather. Get nice large plants – and they always look better in containers (or tree pits if you can protect them from dogs!).
The fall is the time to let the foliage and pumpkins take over the color chart, but if you want flowers, there are asters, sedum, Cyclamen, and the weird but interesting decorative cabbages. Many annuals such as Lantanas, petunias, and abutilons go great guns until the bitter end if pinched back. I also like shrubs with bright berries like American holly and Skimmea. My double impatiens, which look like miniature roses, seem to have really revived with the recent rains. But they are gone with the first hint of frost.
Happy gardening.
Personally, I’m partial to white and green, as in box (buxus) and white petunias. I’m also crazy about dark purple and cream pansies. Red geraniums are another classic.
But really, it depends on your taste and the colors of your house. You can just go to the garden store and pick out whatever annuals catch your eye (as long as you stick to full sun for sunny areas and shade plants for shady areas). They’ll automatically stock whatever’s good for fall. I think it’s nice to stick with one strong color statement rather than planting a rainbow.
Keep the impatiens if they go with your new choices, or kick them out if they don’t.
Got a catalog saying ‘fall blooming’ bulbs. Could that be for *this* year? Or do you just plant them now and hope they bloom in ’11?
the impatiens probably not going to die until get a real frost. Usually around thanksgiving. they just get stringier. Pansies do well in cooler weather. I just bought some for flower boxes.
