Does anyone know of a Brooklyn antique shop that will take a piece on consignment? I’ve been trying to sell this large sideboard/hutch, but realize that it would do better with a professional. Any suggestions?

  1. Yeah, I’d contact an auction house.

There is also Ruby Lane and First Dibs, but I suppose you would want a local sale (though they do sell large furniture items).

Nice piece. I bet Montrose would love it too, since it’s kinda Renaissance Revival-ish.

  2. Did you try Silver Fox or the other guys at the Brooklyn Flea? You might get a better price through them than at the antique shops. Otherwise, I think your best bet is just to keep posting it around brownstone neighborhoods. Or try Doyle, which is a step down from the big auction houses which might snob you to death.

  3. Email photos and descriptions to the experts at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips. They will give you auction estimates, which you can use as a rough appraisal.

  4. No, I’ve not had the piece appraised and know very little about it. It’s actually part of a set and includes another large storage cabinet and six dining chairs, all in the same style (no dining table). I bought the set in 1982 from an antique dealer on Fourth Avenue in Manhattan for $5600.

The pieces are only in fair condition, and we’ve replaced them with more contemporary furnishings when we redid our dining room.

I tried to sell everything on Craigslist for $2000, but no interest at all. Would really like for “an expert” to take on this responsibility.
