I’m looking to buy all new appliances to complete a kitchen renovation and I’ve already picked the appliances I want. However, the prices vary significantly: places like Best Buy (online and in store) are more expensive than, say, “Number1direct” for the same thing. Is there a reason to go with a “brick and mortar” vendor even though it’s more expensive? And if anyone has good experiences with a particular online retailer, please let me know. Thanks!

  1. If you’ve got the time or need the peace of mind, I usually do some sort of combo plan…check out models in store and then get the best price online. If a salesperson is really helpful, see if they’ll match the online price; I’ve heard that prices at PC Richards and even Best Buy are negotiable.

I’ve also have had great success with AJ Madison and their prices have been unbeatable, but I found their showroom small. Not sure about your schedule; i think they’re closing tomorrow afternoon for about a week and a half to celebrate holidays.

  2. If you already know exactly what you want, and installation is not a problem, buying from a B&M store makes no sense. Buy online and save. I buy appliances quite often and in my experience Steve at http://www.appliancesbuyphone.com will get you what you want (if an appliance is not listed on the website call and they will get it for you). Delivery can be arranged in 24 hours and you pay no shipping and no sales taxes in NY. In the past 6 years I never found an other company offering a better delivered price. BTW, delivery is done by PCRichard and the appliances come from PCRichard wholesale warehouse.

  3. Ditto AJ Madison on-line. We’ve bought many appliances from them. They are always competitive, customer service is great and they are Brooklyn-based.

  4. I just bought a fridge and washer and dryer. Ended up at Lowe’s because I just moved and you can get a 10% off coupon when you change your address with USPS. So that combined with a sale at Lowe’s made it cheaper than any online store. And bonus, PECO has that energy star rebate thing going on right now 🙂

  5. I’m looking to spend a good deal of money on appliances soon and was leaning toward AJ Madison as of right now. Good to hear a decent experience with them.

  6. We had a great experience with AJ MAdison’s online prices, and they have a showroom in borough park. The prices were lower and they delivered that week.

  7. Shipping can be pretty expensive on kitchen appliances- that can make the difference.
Some local stores will cut their price to get your business, too.
Returns are generally easier with a local store.
I’m not biased towards either- I built my kitchen with local goods and via the ‘net.

  8. I am not going to knock buying something on-line, particularly Amazon as I buy a lot of tools that way, but I always recommend PC Richard for appliances. Every time I’ve recommended them, someone else has popped on here and agreed. I’ve also shopped there as have my parents and many of my customers and I have never had or heard any complaints.
