Boiler Fresh Air Vent Requirements for a 2 Family?
Does anyone know what the requirements are for a fresh air supply to the boiler for a 2 family home? I’m specifically looking for the section of the code that describes it. I’ve been told my boiler should have a vent, but in all my life, I’ve never seen a fresh air vent on any…

I’ve been told my boiler should have a vent, but in all my life, I’ve never seen a fresh air vent on any of the 2 families I’ve lived in in NYC (which doesn’t mean they were up to code either).
Thanks!
Thanks MP…
Good post, steam man.
I literally today passed inspection of the new 175K BTU boiler. I used old 8″ chimney for fresh air. The only things I had to do to it is put a mesh on the opening in the boiler room and put hood on the outside so the distance between air intake and air exhaust is 3′.
The section of the code that you are looking for is Chapter 7 of the NYC Mechanical Code.
Go to DOB’s website. Look for the 2008 Building Code and then go to the Mechanical Code. Click the link and then follow through to Chapter 7.
As far as openings go, be careful to comply with reuirements for fire rating your boiler room. This may entail fire dampers in the wall openings.
If venting to the interior, look at 1 square inch per 1,000 BTU/hr.
If venting to the exterior look for 1 square inch per 4,00 BTU/hr.
Before proceeding and for detailed information and other requirements refer to the code.
Good luck.
