I need help/suggestions. my cellar is humid and i need ventilation. the walls sweat and things i store get moist. i already installed a vent to hatch in the front but the rear is still moist. i have a vent from the furnace room to the outside vent in the back. i would like a fan or something to bring in fresh air. does anyone have suggestions as to what and who to do this work? approx. how much? getting desperate. thanks.

  1. is this what an H V A C specialist does? Thank you all for your help and suggestions. i have been researching every single suggestion. Thank You.

  2. I laughed at the Humidex that was given to me as a wedding gift from a contractor relative. It is essentially a fan in a metal duct. i laughed that it is $800 plus installation, but it really worked.

The intake is at floor level, and the out it through the window. It counts on getting some fresh air some how. Either down the cellar stairs or from a vent cut in the floor. It really creates an air exchange. I can smell whatever is cooking on the first floor in the cellar, meaning I am getting dry air delivered.

You could really make your own Humidex from duct parts.

  3. Is you fan blowing air in? If so, you should have the fan shooting air out, not in. humidity is mixed with the cellar’s air, you shoot the air out, the water goes with the air. Ideally you should have a fan on one side of the cellar and one opening for fresh air to get in on the opposite side. This way you create a constant breeze that collects and takes out the humidity.

  4. My cellar used to be very humid during the summer. I had a vent created in the back hatch, and I have a fan blowing air out of the vent 24/7 during the summer. That made a huge difference, my cellar is quite dry now.

  5. i had same problem in my last house. the rock walls were treated and brought in a contractor to deal with one specific area, and he solved it. did also have a dehumidifier. good luck.

  6. Interesting. Gosh, these vents and hatches are pricey. I got various quotes of $500 to $750 for hatches with vents. Still haven’t done it. Cellar is pretty humid.
