I am inheriting an Aga cooker if I want it. I was thinking this could be the solution to my problem of how to heat and outfit a little cabin on my property. Could this thing heat a 500 sq ft cabin? It’s now a one-room thing with loft bedroom, but I was hoping to carve in a bedroom or so. I realize this means no oven in the summer, but that’s okay.

I got a quote for $2500 to move and reinstall this thing so even a free Aga isn’t a cheap Aga. But it seems like a cool idea.

  1. >that they’re insulating mean you’re wasting a lot of energy heating the inside of the oven when you really want to heat the room?

Basic physics: does not matter how well or not you insulate the inside if the Aga runs continuously as I believe it does, it will heat the room identically. Of course a sensible normal oven has a thermostat, so insulation will make all the difference.

  2. American pot-belly stoves are actually more efficient and the heat that comes from the well-placed exhaust flue will heat the space up faster than an Aga.
Like an Aga you can keep a kettle on it so you can ‘ave a spot’o tea any time day or night.

  3. RH, I went to school in england and remember the house cat napping ON the Aga (just another weird thing about the UK — cats way too near the food prep for my taste)

Minard, I was thinking it would under-heat the space which would be fine as I’d have to heat it to a minimal temp all the time anyway. Then I’d have to supplement somehow. But you’re right, over-heating would be dumb.

I read last night that you can use the Aga as your boiler — that’s weird.

  4. An Aga can heat a 500 sq foot space easily. Maybe over-heat it. Not a good solution for a weekend house as it will take many hours for the space to reach a comfortable temperature. The best thing is to turn an Aga on and leave it on all season, in the UK people leave it on most of the year.
It is a clunky low-tech piece of ancient cookery though.
I would be wary. Spend the money on something with a remote control so you can turn it on half way there and have the cabin comfortable when you arrive. An anti-Aga.

  5. My mother heats her kitchen with the Aga. I’d say her kitchen is about 300sq ft. She leaves the door closed, but who knows if it would heat a larger space?

Here’s the thing…I have to sit right on top of that thing to warm up. The rest of the family is fine with it. But then they grew up without central heat.

  6. My great aunt had an original. I’m not sure it’d work so well. Wouldn’t the fact that they’re insulating mean you’re wasting a lot of energy heating the inside of the oven when you really want to heat the room?

It would definitely look cool though so there is that!

  7. I haven’t looked into anything as I was hoping to start to think about this thing next year. But the cooker is a now or never kind of thing.

I’ll look into the Rinnai tho. Certainly don’t mind buying a range — was assuming I’d buy a little basic propane one for $500 at some point.
