what are the rules regarding replacing windows in a landmarked area?

we’ve been told two different things:

**that that the windows need to conform to the pix taken in the 1940s(!) for tax purposes;

OR:

**that you can replace what you already have (i.e. if you have aluminum now, you don’t need to go to wood if you replace the windows).

both of these can’t be right. which is correct?

  1. I believe neither are correct. What is your source of information? The Landmarks Preservation Commission has a very thorough guide online that describes both the requirements and the process. I believe that if you were to replace windows they would have to be historically appropriate to the time of construction of the house. Many window companies are familiar with the process and will file the paperwork for you.
