We’ve recently bought an apartment next to the John Jay High School in Park Slope. The car park, adjacent to our apartment, is now being turned into a recreational area with basketball courts. Apparently the facility will also be open to the public some of the time. We’re very worried about the noise implications. Already the late night noise from school events is a problem. We’re not getting clear information about the exact plans of the school at this point. What recourse do we have, if any, to ensure that noise levels are restricted and that the facility is not used at night, weekends etc? Any advice would be most welcome!
What you describe as a car park is actually a school yard that should have been used for school and community recreation all along. I believe there is a NYC initiative to restore these open spaces to the schools and the communities. It really is a good thing. That said, I would never live next to a school for the reasons you have stated.
wow… getting mad about weekend school events. god forbid those kids have something to do on the weekend. u cant move next to an urban high school and expect peace and quiet… actually ANY high school for that matter.
what kind of events are these? basketball games? band practice?
*rob*
I’m sorry, J & j, but OP said “not used on weekends” and “school events [which I presume are not every day] are a problem”. Does that sound reasonable?
Obviously if it says closed at 9pm and there’s something going on, OP has a legitimate issue.
Wow. Some really nasty comments to a perfectly legit question.
OP, other than 311, would say that there’s a lot of courts around. All of them have restrictions on late night usage. Might not be a big impact to your quality of life. Sorry for the rudeness of some posters. Most folks here are helpful . . . and grown ups.
The 311 fields noise complaints. If it becomes an abusive (loud crowds in an area that has a posted time it’s supposed to be empty) call it every time. When the neighbors near the PS library on 9th St and 6th continually complained about the levels of the (ancient and inefficient) roof air compressors, there were meter readings taken and the library was forced to deal with it. I have no idea what the details of the yard are, or about the sound of legit school events, but if it says “No Admittance between 9PM and 6 AM” and there’s an “event” going on at 2 AM, call every time it happens. If you have a legit issue just call 311.
Why are the responses so harsh? There are noise restrictions in the city after certain time of night, right? How late is there noise?
>Already the late night noise from ***school events*** is a problem [emphasis mine]
Sounds pretty much like an entitled person to me…
you have no say in the matter…if the noise bothers you, you were an idiot to buy a place next to a highschool
Why should there be such restrictions?
