Parrot in Wallabout
This parrot was hanging out on my porch yesterday evening, eating the food I leave out for feral cats! I sure hope I don’t go out and find green feathers scattered about!

oops, lovebirds are in the parrot family. Either way, I don’t think it’s one of the wild ones and the little feller might need some help finding its way back home or a safe place.
1910; Yes – actual photo. I got within a couple of feet of the bird to take this photo. (I have some better pics but they show what a wreck my deck is in so I didn’t post them!)
I had assumed this was one of the flock of Brooklyn parrots that had traveled here from their usual haunts until I saw the photo on the page you linked. It must be a private pet. It’s not around today so I hope it found its way home. If I see it again I’ll put up posters in the neighborhood and maybe try to catch it.
Not to belabor the issue, but a Peach Faced Love Bird IS a parrot.
Depending on the size it could even be a parakeet.
It’s just really hard to tell from the angle of the bird’s head in this picture.
If you google Peach Faced Love Bird and Quaker Parrot, you will get a better idea
of what kind of bird this is and could maybe add that info to your ‘Found Bird’ posted if you go that route.
Have you taught him to say any words yet???
Still think it’s some species of parrot. Peach faced love birds are smaller and have, as the name describes peach colored circles on each cheek.
Serisouly, parrots can be cantankerous creatures and would put up a fight vs. cat, but other than our wild parrots probably won’t make it on it’s own out on the mean streets.
If you care, and it seems like you do with the cats, Put up found bird posters (I know there’s been discussion here about ripping those posters down) with the pic or call 311 to see if it can be collected by any chance. Can you get close enough to catch it? Use leather garden gloves if you try.
Very cute. You should try to see if you can trap the little guy and hopefully find its owner. It’s not only the cats to worry about, my friend’s Cockatiel was killed by a raccoon.
heard they like feral cats…
Looks like a Peach-Faced Love Bird. Definitely not a Quaker.
Probably an escapee.
Also, pray that you don’t have Chinese neighbors who will want to eat him. 🙂
