Question: jacuzzi tub – worth the price of admission? I’m always jazzed to find this in a hotel, but not so sure how much I’d use it at home (like anything else that’s novel). This would be a single person, 60 inch version, given the space.
Besides the price differential vs. a standard tub, what else should I be thinking about? Installation hassles? Repirs? Reliability?
I do so enjoy bathing…there’s also a long-shot, longer term possibilty of putting a hot-tub somewhere on the premises, maybe the basement.
To me, both these things just seem a little silly. Aren’t all standard tubs deep enough for “soaking”? Anyway, we soak every day — we don’t have a shower.
Now, a shower, now you’re cooking with gas there.
We’re getting one on Monday, though, so I will no longer be able to amaze you with our backwardness.
I am a germaphobe and the idea of gunky pipes on a whirlpool jets is revolting to me! I went with a 72×42 airjet tub after a colleague had one installed in her reno and couldn’t stop talking about it. Self cleaning, quiter than a ‘cuzzi, deep tub, and you can still use your bath salts, oils, etc. Here’s the marketing verbage:
Step in, sit back and feel the pure pleasure of being caressed by thousands of warm air bubbles exploding on every inch of your body with Pure Air®. Where whirlpools circulate a combination of air and water to produce an intense, targeted massage, air baths, by design, create a softer, subtler, full-body experience. The only thing that churns the water in a Pure Air® bath is just that: pure, heated air. The result is a gentle, scintillating immersion – bubbly relaxation that is more champagne than shiatsu.
I haven’t moved in yet so I don’t have a tubtime experience to share but I can’t wait because I just love taking a bath! I bought the tub online at homeclick.com after seeing it at a building materials auction in maryland.
If I had to guess, I’d say I used mine maybe five times since I put it in? Add to that the fact that they are almost always wider than a standard tub and I have a small bathroom and the fact that water accumulates in the nozzles wells, which wouldn’t be that bad if not for the fact that I have a skylight over head so I get algae if I don’t dry them out after a shower and I’d have to say that I wouldn’t do it again.
I second the steam shower. We used ours alot. So much that the panel burned out and I have to get it fixed. My wife keeps kicking me in the pants as I am too lazy to get it off the wall…
Mopar – you’ve answered your own questions!
Although, there are now not only jets, but also ‘air baths’ – small holes that pump out hot air. Some people prefer those – and it’s safe to use oils/salts in them b/c water never gets into the pumps (as it does with jet tubs).
What is a soaking tub? A bath deep enough to fill with water to your neck? What is a jacuzzi? Same thing only with little water jets?
We have 3 bathrooms; a ‘jacuzzy’ (Kohler version) is in the guest bathroom. The guests love it – and we have lots of guests.
From past experience, the husb and I knew we would never use it – so in our “en suite”, it’s just a shower, albeit a nice one (no steam though).
I can’t imagine anyone NOT having a steam shower installed professionally. But why are they prone to problems?
I have two, quite large jacuzzis in my loft. When we moved in and my wife thought this was the best thing in the world, I had to have a larger hot water tank installed because we couldn’t fill the tub even if nothing else was being used. Since then, 6+ years ago, the tub in our master has been used less than once a year, the other has never been used period other than to clean window screens, and I have a 90 gallon hot water heater for no reason.
We have put a Duravit airbath soaking tub in a weekend house. Quieter, cleaner, better looking and gets more use.
