Living in Gowanus
Thanks to all who have responded to my posts this week. One last biggie: Place we are considering buying is on 11th street below 4th avenue. We are nervous about moving so far from park and seemingly far from services we are accustomed to. However, in exchange we are getting more space for the bucks….
Thanks to all who have responded to my posts this week. One last biggie: Place we are considering buying is on 11th street below 4th avenue. We are nervous about moving so far from park and seemingly far from services we are accustomed to. However, in exchange we are getting more space for the bucks. Anyone have an opinion about this area good or bad? safety, shopping, noise, pollution,up and coming or ongoing no man’s lands….etc
thanks….
Thanks for all the info my peeps (a number of you seem to be well acquainted with each other online and that’s kind of cool)
I think the area is developing and it is far enought from canal to not smell bad.
Yes, it’s a bit of a hike to prospect park (I like to walk my dog there) but I’ll just have to move my *ss a little earlier and get more exercise.
Worried about noise on 4th ave (as well as pollution) but I’m probably just kidding myself thinking closer to park has better air quality!
Antidope, I find you lovable too :-/
As for the block in question, it would be very convenient to Lowes Home Center.
I do go there all the time.
i meant that in the lovable way. really. i find you to be a positive voice 9/10 times. i am just saying the 1/10 usually reflects a form of bh-centricity that some might construe as, well, snob-ish.
antidope,
You may not agree with me all the time, but I am not a crank.
You owe me an apology.
personally *living in gowanus* wouldn’t work for me or any human i know. the canal is gross. 😉 but living on 11th st btwn 3/4 is grand if you dont need a lime/brick/brownstone. great block. just plant your veggies in raised beds. good value.
don’t mind minard. he’s our resident crank. anything other than bh is not livable to him.
how far would you be from the Superfund site?
that may be more important than how far you are from Bar Tano.
4 and 20 blackbirds
brooklyn homebrew
bar tano
michael and pings (sp.?)
close to smith and 9th, and 9th and 4th subway
think you’re picking a good spot and the neighborhood will develop
yuck
try another area first
everyone busts on greenpoint, but most of the residential space is no where near newtown, but gowanus is a superfund site in a bad elementary school district.
i say greenpoint is way closer to the city, has way way better schools and terrific amenities, and you have 2 parks – mcgolrick (gorgeous park) and mccarren and the waterfront pier that’s done, and a huge waterfront park that’s on the way.
I think you shouldn’t worry too much about it – you are still VERY close either by bike/walk/or drive to the park. You’re only like 4 avenues away – so what?!? – I live over on 21st street and 6th avenue – I never think – oh wow am kinda far from the park – I just walk my butt up there when I want to go 🙂
also many streets are quiet and are filled with longtime residents as well as new ones and are safe. You’ve got loads of new places open on 3rd avenue on 8th and 9th street and Gowanus is really picking up – I think you will be OK!
