Are Summer ConEd Bills Always This Nasty?
We moved recently from a small apartment in a large building to a larger apartment in a small building. We have central A/C, tall ceilings, and, I’m guessing, not a lot of insulation. We moved recently from a small apartment in a large building to a larger apartment in a small building. We have central A/C, tall ceilings, and, I’m guessing, not a lot of insulation. Our electricity bill last month was $290! Does that sound right? We never paid more than $100 in our smaller place–but that was with one window mounted unit only. Sweat equity…
rob – the 290 is w/ central ac the poster said. central ac is a budget killer if you are on a budget. i have window acs for my house and cost a fraction of my neighbor who put in central ac.
Last month Con Ed Solutions more than tripled my KWH rate from 8.3 to 29ish. After a few “there’s nothing we can do about it” phone calls they finally capitulated.
Everybody keep an eye on your bills.
wait, read the bill carefully. me and my roommate got a bill from coned for almost FOUR HUNDRED dollars a while back, but was eventually reduced to about 200 hundred. the reason was because for that particular month they didnt have access (or just didnt go and read it) to the meters in the building. when they dont read the meter everyone gets an average bill of what the entire building used, so it could be higher or lower depending on your neighbors usage.. anyway, they came back and reread the meter, and resent the bill and it was like half.
290 for one window unit AC is ridiculous. we have two window unit acs that are used a LOT and it’s a duplex and it’s no where near that high. and neither are energy efficient AC’s.

I appreciate this thread. I work in energy. Does anyone know their actual usage? As for me, I moved into the clinton hill coops in january. My apt. is 800 sqft. we have two window a/cs and a ceiling fan. I leave one a/c constantly for the dog. We used 291 kWh. Because the apartment is submetered and we are billed on a time of use rate structure my bill was only $66 last month.
Here’s some tips for saving energy: put all your electronics on a power strip and click it off when you go to sleep. the cable box, when it’s off, uses 2/3s of the energy that an energy star refrigerator uses when it’s on. The TV. hard drive, computer, phone chargers all use energy when off unless you use a power strip.
If you keep lots of liquid in the refrigerator it will use less energy.
What is your use? I’m interested to hear.
Do you have a programmable thermostat????
I’m in a new building also. Before I moved in I installed ceiling fans in two bedrooms and the living room. Tremendous difference with these going. I’m able to live comfortably with temps in the 74-76 degree range and I kick the temp up when I’m out to 79-80. With central air and me being home a lot since I’m retired I can keep the bills down to about $200.
You can try getting one of the sub contractors to see if your costs go down. The sub contractors usually charge less / watt than ConEd even though they use ConEd’s delivery system.
Having air conditioning, using it and then compalining about the price is really lame.
Boofer, I’m thinking it won’t be that high as I leave my a/c off when I’m not at home. I figure I’ve got about a $300 bill coming. I can’t imagine the bill would be more than $140 a month from June through August.
