I read through all the excellent posts of venting gas dryers, but i still have a question…

the gas dryer that came with our house is situated in a 2nd floor closet below a shaftway that goes past a third floor WC (with a tiny window looking into the shaftway) up to the roof where it is protected from the elements by a metal vent.

the previous owners had a flexible pvc duct emptying the exhaust up into the shaftway just about 6 inches above the ceiling of the closet (i know…BIG fire hazard).

im going to replace this flexible duct with smooth aluminum ducts and plan on ending the duct about 4 feet above the WC window, but below the vent on the roof. the exhaust will be hot air, and it’s basically 4 feet or so from the roof vent, so i think this should do it.

is this ok, or does the dryer vent have to go straight through the roof on it’s own?

  1. There is already a large opening on my roof for this shaftway, shielded by a metal vent that lets plenty of air out. I don’t want to alter this vent, so I can run my dryer exhaust right up and inside the metal roof vent if necessary, and the air goes up and out. I just don’t want to have to punch a new hole in my roof, or have to redo the sturdy metal vent that is already in place.

  2. It should go out of the building. It’s not so much a fire hazard as much as it’s likely to produce mold and condensation that will damage everything if not vented out of the house.
