Hi,
I am planning to buy a two story house. The family room is of decent size with 8 foot ceiling, there is a recreation room on top of the family room. Size is the same.
I wanted to know whether its possible to tear down the ceiling in the family room and make it one big room similar to a Two Story Family Room.
I am a newbie, Please help and advise.
Also consider chimney issues.
You could have electric wire and plumbing going through the ceiling. You could have a main beam going through the ceiling, although it’s unlikely. You need to do it in a structurally sound way so you don’t weaken the walls, joists, beams, and other ceilings. I am not an expert, but it seems to me you will need to consult an architect and a structural engineer, not just a contractor. Also, the situation varies from building type to building type. Brownstone rowhouse construction is different from modern construction, for example.
Hey Kevin, buy a fucking ad.
Sounds doable. I assume this family room is on the first floor and the recreation room is on the second? Definatly, get a permit. You need to make sure what you want to take down is not structural to the house anyway.
