Did you consider saving the original medallions? We restored ours seven years ago. They were in a very bad condition, hidden under multiple layers of paint and falling off. We were lucky to find a guy who was able to fix them. He secured our ornament and restored missing pieces for a very reasonable price and without a mess. His name is Alex, have a look at his website: http://www.decorplasterwork.com.
We also bought 3 Felber medallions when we renovated 10 years ago. They are gorgeous and continue to get many compliments. The profile (ie. depth) on each one is really substantial so they look very authentic. Even our hard-to-please Polish GC (who knows plaster from the old world) was impressed by their quality. They don’t have every style available so if money is no object you could have someone else fabricate customized medallions based on a neighbor’s original (they make a mold). We just chose Felber medallions that were the right proportions for the rooms and a close enough match historically.
Brooklynista thanks for your help. They look like great value for money also!
Sorry, don’t know of any makers in Brooklyn. However, we got a fabulous plaster ceiling medallion in an online transaction with Felber:

What you see is really what you get. No comparison in quality between Felber medallions and other plaster medallions we came across in our search. Ours arrived on time and in perfect condition.
