Metal Post Thickness?
So I’m back and found someone to help out with moving my gate back down the driveway onto new posts, but I’m going to handle buying the new posts. I’m getting 4×4″ square steel tubing, but does anyone have any advice on a good thickness? 11 gauge, 1/4″, 1/2″? Is there any easy way to…
So I’m back and found someone to help out with moving my gate back down the driveway onto new posts, but I’m going to handle buying the new posts. I’m getting 4×4″ square steel tubing, but does anyone have any advice on a good thickness? 11 gauge, 1/4″, 1/2″? Is there any easy way to tell what the existing ones are? If it helps, the gate is quite heavy, not one of the hollow aluminum ones.
Thanks for any advice.
Any 4×4 square steel post should hold the gate no problem but ask the person who will be doing the welding what’s the minimum thickness they feel comfortable working with. Picking the right thickness will make the welding easy, if the post is too thin welding the gate hinges could be tricky.
Yep, you’re right– the existing ones are adequate and I would use the same size- I just don’t have the tools to cup the cap off to measure inside. I was hoping there was another way to get an idea of the thickness needed.
It looks as though the existing posts are adequate, right???? How about using the same size??? Cut the cap off and measure them. It sounds like you’re going about this in a penny-wise, pound foolish manner.
