All of a sudden our receiver and/or speaker/subwoofer, which is a part of our home theater surround sound set-up, isn’t working. When the receiver is turned on there is a popping sound from the speakers that sounds like the speakers have busted. There are four speakers that are installed in the ceiling and the center speaker which sits on the tv stand, (plus the subwoofer). The tv is wall mounted (not sure that’s relevant). Anyway, we are looking for someone who can come by and figure out what’s going on with the receiver/sound. I have no idea who to call. (System was installed in January 2009 by the Circuit City people, Firedog, I think the were called.)

  1. if its all 5 of your speakers etc i’d either look at if your speakers and receiver match impedance (ohms). just throwing it out there.

if its just a regular standard issue home theater receiver and not some fancy tube amp, your amp can usually drive a speaker of the same or higher ohms. for example, an 8 ohm amp can drive an 8 or 16 ohm speakers, but not 4.

since it sounds like all of your speakers being affected i’d look to it being a problem with the receiver /amp, which may or may not be due to matching speaker ohms, wattage.

just something to be aware, but could be any other number of other factors.

  2. forgot to finish my thought: if the crackling noise continues after swapping speaker using same wire, you have isolated the problem to either the wire or head unit.

Take it a step further and connect a fresh wire to the head unit and test speaker. No crackling = bad wire. Crackling = bad head unit.

  3. a few tests before you call in professionals:

check all wire end connections @ speakers and reciever. look for corrosion if this mediaroom is in the basement (humidity)

pull speaker cover off and check all cones for damage

swap speakers at speaker end of wire, does the crackling noise swap too?
