Window Help
Previous owners put cheap replacement windows in our brownstone, which are now breaking. I would like to fix them so they are functional and begin the process of thinking about replacing all 16 of ’em; fortunately only a few are broken. Any ideas for fixing or thoughts about replacing would be appreciated.

The window place on 5th avenue very close to flatbush could do this as well I believe.
I second the vote for Windows We Are on 5th Ave at 91st St. I just picked up a repaired aluminum window and they are coming to the house next week to repair 5 others. Not expensive, very professional, nice people to work with. They also sell very nice all-wood replacement windows, I am saving up for those.
If you can afford to do a proper replacement now, rather than repair, that seems a better way to go. I’d certainly call at least three “proper” window replacement companies for their insight and estimates before making a temporary fix to windows you’ll eventually replace. If you need permits, ask the vendors to include it as a separate line item in their estimate and get a permit for ALL windows at the beginning. You are not obligated to replace them all, but it will save you cost, time and trouble down the road.
Call Historical Windows of NY. Run as fast as you can from anyone who says they can put in a replacement window for $250, or anything close to that number.
we had bay ridge give us a quote (no charge) and they said $250 each for “replacement” windows, which is vinyl I guess, and $1,000 each for wood. This might give you a ball park idea. I think wood windows are so much nicer and last better but of course a lot more money if you go that route.
I’ve used Brooklyn Window and Door and have been happy w/ their product lines and service. You or your contractor will need to measure and install them.
Speak w/ Mike– On Ave Q or P and McDonald.
Call “Windows We Are”
The replaced all 31 windows in my building this past September. Couldn’t be happier. Great company to deal with.
If later you want to replace them with something nice, I believe Windows Are We is one place to call. There must be others too. We are in the same situation, but I haven’t yet looked into it too seriously. I tried calling Bay Ridge Window but they wanted to charge me $80 just to come out and give a quote.
There is a company called Window Fix that is super cheap. Friends of mine used it, said it was a good cheap solution (not the fanciest solution but worked and cheap).
