I am a homeowner and I have experience welding. Besides, I have a contractor who will supervise the job. Does anybody knows the best place where I can buy the steel beams and columns to make a metal deck? Where is the best place in the Brooklyn area?

Ipe wood carries a class A fire rating, same rating as concrete and steel, so you can legally run it right up to your building. The supporting structure of the deck must be steel. My deck’s built that way, passed inspection, and is 100% legit.

Whatever you do, build it right the first time, according to code, have it inspected and make sure it passes. It will save you from a myriad of potential headaches down the road.

    Good luck with the project!

  2. Brainum is expensive.

If you have cash and a large job, Colonial Steel in the Bronx. Very inexpensive.

If you want a quantity that’s too small for Colonial and/or are using a credit card, Rapid Steel Supply in LIC, near Fresh Direct. Nicer people and cheaper than Brainum in my experience, particularly if you aren’t into using their lingo (ie, a vague word like “columns” instead of “square tube.”)

Not to be a jerk, but there’s a difference between having some welding experience and knowing how to make welds that are consistently structural from lots of difficult angles, as when constructing a deck like above. I taught welding for awhile, and found that student overconfidence (and subsequent frustration) once they “knew how to weld” was freaking boundless.

I think it’s good to challenge oneself. But unless you were being modest, you might want to work out Plan B before buying a bunch of steel and diving in, so that you feel like the stakes are low enough to stick with it if it gets frustrating.

    Have fun!

  3. Also for Luckyseven,

It should be noted that this is obviously an illegal deck because NY requires that you have a three foot fireproof barrier between your property and your neighbor’s. Meaning, looking down on the deck, you should see either metal grating or pavers on both the left and right. If you have someone build a deck exactly as shown and your neighbors call you in, you will be subject to enormous fines – probably almost equivalent to what you paid to have it built in the first place. This is definitely something you want done with permits because it is such an obvious alteration to your property.

We are considering building a deck and we have seen really good reviews on this website of a company called Sketch & Hammer, I think???

  4. Luckyseven –

I remember this pic from a previous post a few months ago and the builder posting something in the comments section. After looking in the “decks” archive, the builder’s name is Steve. He posted his email in his post if you want to contact him.
