We have two old dead stumps of fir bushes and two new dead stumps of out of control rose of sharon bushes that we cut down. We’re on a budget and looking to tear up the stumps ourselves in order to put in new plants. Does anyone know what kind of tool would be appropriate? Could we just chop them up with a hatchet, or would Home Depot have some kind of super-electric-stump-remover we could rent? Will we be able to get them out ourselves? Thanks for any helpful ideas!

  1. We used a pickaxe and shovel. We dug and chopped until we had it loose then dug down around until we could bury it since we had no hope of getting a stump grinder into the backyard. We did try renting a chainsaw but found it was pretty useless. No joke about the elbow grease. I actually have two more waiting for me after four years and haven’t worked up the energy after the first two.

  2. stump grinders are large, on wheels. if you live in a typical brooklyn house, don’t know how you’ll get one in the yard.

Axe, pickaxe and chain saw should do the trick along with a 55 gallon drum of elbow grease.
