Sealing Old Fireplace

Any recommendations / suggestions on the best way to seal my old nonworking fireplaces. Fireplaces were used for old manufactured gas fixtures and are probably unable to handle a wood fire. Chimney’s are not made for hotter wood burning fires and the fire making space is too narrow. Do I just brick up the space behind the old tin (?) gas piece?
