Hi, I have separated room in the basement with wooden panel walls. I want to replace the wooden panels with sheetrock. Do I need to permit for this?

The house is old and does not have CofO. The room was there for long time. It has wiring (which I will not touch). Is there something I can do to refinish it short of complete CofO nightmare?
I do not plan to rent it or to sleep in it. It is more then 50% above the ground and has means of egress. When we bough the house the basement was marked as “unfinished”.
of course snicking in Sheetrock at night is an option but I want something less exiting.

  1. purple is the new green, apparently.

    mold, mildew, and moisture resistant.

one of the guys was calling it green-board–i thought he was just colorblind.

  2. denton and guywithahouse beat me to the punch. I’ve only used “green board.” Purple is new to me, but I am glad I haven’t had to ‘rock a bathroom lately.

  3. If you are not changing the use, egress or occupancy then you don’t need a new c. of o. regardless even though you may need a permit it will be an alteration tyoe 2 with no new c.o. required.

If you replace the sheetrock on the EXACT location of the old walls then yoy don’t need a permit at all provided the following requirements are met:

    1. No plumbing work involved
    2. No disturbance of any existng required fire stopping / blocking system areas. Example: You are ripping of and replacing the wall of your boiler room.
    3. The location of all areas of work is exactly as existing locations with no modifications whatsoever.

  4. Why do you need to sneak?
Bring your sheet rock in, and do the work.
You’re not changing the plumbing or the electric, and you’re not even changing the use. The room already exists– so really all you’re doing is to clean it up/finish it to make it somewhat usable.
You can always file for a permit; but in this case I probably wouldn’t bother.
    Enjoy your new project!!
(Don’t get hung up on C of O– many other Bklyn buildings don’t have it either–)
