Quiet A/Cs
We are replacing the old, inefficient air conditioners in our apartment, and wondered if anyone has purchased window a/c’s that are relatively quiet. I’ve learned that the models (and noise factor!) change from year to year, so I’m hoping folks with recent purchases will chime in. We need a 6,000 and a 12,000 BTU unit….

I have a Kenmore (Sears) that we purchased a few years ago. As air conditioners go, it is relatively quiet, but lets face it, no air conditioner is actually quiet.
We have LG units after doing a bunch of research, they are nice and quiet. I tried a Frigidaire from Lowes last year and though there was a rocket ship about to launch from my window. Home Depot sells LG. I think they now come with a 5 year guarantee. One thing I like about them, that the Frigidaire didn’t have, was a slide out chassis that made install and winter removal easy. A couple of people I know have Friedrich and they are also quiet.
One thing I did last year was instead of screwing the AC to the lower sash I put in a cross bar on the window and screwed to that so I could open the window, made a big difference
We were a bit skeptical when our friends recommended us to purchase a Panasonic unit. We had 2-3 Friedrich units before this. The unit is very quiet and we have not had any problems with it, plus it is cheaper than the Friedrich. It has been 3 yrs so we are definitely satisfied.
I think a lot has to do with how they’re installed and how well they’re screwed together. We have 3 identical Friedrich 10k btu units, and the cover vibrates on one of them no matter how I shim it…really annoying. They’re bolted into a metal brace, too.
Panasonic.
We just bought a 6,ooo btu Frigidaire for our son’s room based on Consumer Reports- I totally regret it. I have a 7,800 btu Panasonic in our bedroom which is great and is way quieter than the Frigidaire. I bought the Frigidaire because it was recommended by Consumer Reports, but it is definitely noisier than our Panasonic. We bought our Panasonic at J&R.
I did a lot of research on this last summer after getting a “quiet” fridgidaire which made our bedroom sound like the runway at JFK. The guy at PC Richards recommended Sharp relative to noise, which matched our online research. It’s about half as loud as the Frigidaire we purchased – highly recommend it.
often what wakes me up from these units in not when running – but when click on/off – does it with a thud.
My friend just picked up a 12k btu Frigidaire at Lowes and when i went over this weekend it sounded fine.
