Painting/Stripping Gas Pipe.
my plumber is installing gas boiler. Originally he told me that it is ok to paint gas line. I picked a shade of hunter green and painted it. Now he said, that he need to strip the paint in order to close the permit. Why? Do I need to strip whole line or just connections?

thanks everybody. I thought it is related to the color I used.
We just installed a gas line for a restaurant that they took upon themselves to paint the afternoon we finished putting it in.
Before the paint we were required to test the new pipe at 3psi. Now that it’s painted, the DoB is looking for a 150psi test.
Personally, I’m not worried that my pipes are being subject to 150psi.
There’s no reason they should leak. My opinion is you should ask your plumber if he can just do the inspection as is.
DOB requires a different standard if the line is painted. Unpainted low pressure gas lines will be tested up to 5 psi and painted low pressure gas lines must be tested at 90 psi. I had to deal with this a few years ago. I believe my numbers are accurate although my memory has seen better days.
Strip it, close the permit and then paint it again if you wish.
Good luck.
