Law to Provide CO2 Alarms Too?
Is it mandatory to provide co2 alarms for your tenants? I thought smoke alarms were, but wasn’t sure about co2 nowadays. I’m going to buy the dual ones either way, but was wondering about whether it is now the law. PS It is a 5 family with some RS apts.

Yanks21 and Bowl of…
It’s all good–just sayin’.
No worries…Guess I get jumpy
sometimes.
I see- my mistake if I implied that subtly. I only mentioned that tidbit because I know the laws can sometimes differ for RS and non-RS tenants, not that they deserve different treatment or that I would get one tenant something safer than another. I was just wondering- it’s a moot point I guess since I’m getting hooking up all the apts with the dual function ones anyway.
Thanks again for the info.
Yanks, I can see where Brooklander was coming from with the RS comment. you mentioned in the OP about having a few RS tenants; but the type of tenants you have is completely irrelevant to the CO detector law! Believe it or not you were subtly implying that RS tenants are somehow less deserving…….presumably bc they pay less.
Thanks for the info. I was planning to just get the two-in-one units.
Brooklander- Wow! Talk about bad mojo- where did I say I wanted to inconvenience them or put them in danger? If you read, I already said I was getting the dual ones- I was just wondering about if the current law now extended to CO detectors.
That was a pretty big conclusion to leap to based on the info I gave- the truth is I actually like my RS tenants more than the others- they’re friendlier, more helpful, and more respectful.
Since many units come with both smoke and CO detectors, why wouldn’t you just install those? Kidde is a good brand, for ex.
Consider hardwiring them– fewer scuff marks on the ceilings as the batteries only
support the internal program of the detector, and so, lasts longer.
An aside– I’m constantly amazed by people w/ RS tenants who look for ways to put them out or inconvenience them. You got/bought the bldg w/ them as tenants– why would you want them less safe or satisfied than your other tenants? If their unit burns/floods etc, it won’t improve the rest of your building. And,
It’s bad mojo!
If they’re undesirable tenants, and you can prove it, get a good L/T lawyer and take care of it. Otherwise treat them right–
mount them low enough so when the batteries start to beep they can take them out (and of course not install new ones) without using their shoes to knock the whole thing off the ceiling.
My bad- yes, carbon MONoxide.
Carbon dioxide (CO2)? — No.
Carbon monoxide (CO)? — Yes.
