Currently, there is no spigot to connect a hose to water the garden in the back of my house. The hatch to the basement has been cemented over with a patio, so no easy and obvious way to get to the basement for piping to water. Anyone have experience adding a spigot in their back yard with any suggestions about how to do it, estimated cost, etc.

  1. As DIBS said, frostproof sillcock is the key. Forget water shut-offs. Get the frostproof sillcock and eliminate any risk of human error.

  3. We had John hlad put in both a front and back spigot…maybe in the 300$ range. We turn it off with a valve in the basement over the winter. He talked us into getting a weird removable handle in the front (can’t remember why) and i regret it because if you leave it out people steal it, and if you take it in then it gets lost.

To clarify, water shutoff should be inside the house.
Past the shutoff, if it freezes (I’ve seen frostproof freeze) no worries, no flooded basement.

  5. I have a slightly different set up but would love to hear some plumber recommendations. I tried to get this done a couple of years ago and no one ever called me back.

  6. We did it, too, they went from the basement through the wall to the outside, and it cost about $300. We had the plumber install a water shutoff so we could drain the pipe in the winter.

  7. In the event that you may want to use the hose in the winter months for anything, and not have the line freeze, specify a “frostproof sillcock.”
