I used to work for a Denver HVAC company so I might be able to give you some pointers. http://www.denverheating.org Just like car mechanics and any other skilled trade, unethical companies will just charge you as much as they think they can for heating and air conditioning repair.
pallone air conditioners. I had a leak in my air handler and All HVAC sent several technicians who had no clue how to fix it and I was charged a fortune. I called Pallone and the technician looked at it and determined that the waste pipe was pitched incorrectly and had it fixed in an hour. This was after 5 visits from All HVAC.
