For starters, I realize this is a stupid question, but here goes anyway. My fiancé and I are looking at an apartment in a beautiful George Chapell building in Northern Crown Heights. I used to live in the Chasidic neighborhood, never had a problem, ditto when I lived in Bushwick. But just the other day, after four years in the city, I had my first “true” NYC experience, as I was clocked by a high school kid IN GREENPOINT on my way to work. Now I’m feeling cagey, and I guess this is my silly attempt to build my confidence back up. So long as I don’t go trying to steal away any water guns from which I’m being assailed, I should be fine, right?

  1. don’t even try moving to a neighborhood like CH and teaching anyone “a lesson” or how to act. you leave your pride at the door and call the cops.

  2. end of school year excitement. Heard someone really got punched hard/serios last week by what was described to me as ‘wilding’ by junior high kids near Smith st.

  3. What M4L and CrownHeightsLady said. This is a great neighborhood. It’s not a perfect neighborhood, but show me one that is. You can get mugged anywhere, as you well know. Over my last 10 years here, I’ve gotten to know my neighborhood very well, and it is getting better all the time.

I also know all of the George Chappell buildings here, and am curious as to which one you are talking about, on which street. There are quite a few. The man did not design a bad building, so whichever one it is, congrats.

  4. Thanks guys. Putting my mind at ease.

@NSS As I alluded to, there was about a dozen of them, one with a squirt gun, putting it to good use as I waited for the 62 to come. I tried to grab the Super Soaker, his friend did not take kindly to this. I guess that’s what I get for wearing a bow tie to work. Was I asking for it? I thought this was America, after all.

  5. It’s a great area with wonderful homes and structures. The area has improved over the years and continues too. I reside in southern CH on the other side of Eastern Parkway and love it. Unfortunately as stated earlier, it’s big city and sh*t happens BUT you’ll enjoy the area and the wonderful Caribbean food…smile.
