Our washing machine is broken. If it cant be fixed (on 2nd try) tomorrow, we will have to buy a new one. Based on consumer reports I will be looking to get a Kenmore (Sears) or a Samsung but I will want to pick it up on Saturday. Where should I go to buy the machine (needs to be accessible from or ideally in Brooklyn, have stock of said machine and also ideally give me a decent price)?

Lastly, if anyone has a frontloading Samsung or Kenmore – how do you like it?

Thx

  1. Kenmore appliances aren’t actually made by Sears and usually have a name brand equivalent. (used to be Whirlpool, but I’m not sure if that’s still true). You might want to find out what it is to have more options.

EBA, on Nostrand Ave., in Flatbush, has very good prices.

  2. We bought a front loader Kenmore from Sears 10 years ago, had to have it replaced after 7-8 years. Other than that it worked fine and dryer still going strong, Sears delivered but not sure if they or our contractor installed. However, Sears was incredibly, incredibly clueless when it came time for repair, dealing with warranty, replacing and installing machine. Hugely frustrating nightmare dealing with store and 800#. Then they had some yo-yo installer telling me they couldn’t install the old model like the new model, he gave me the I’ve been doing this 20 years and it can’t be done line, but took me like 3 minutes to show him how to do it, and I’m no mechanical wizard. I’m still pissed off 2-3 years later, really not sure how Sears stays in business, complete morons all around. Ok, done venting.

  3. We just got a new washer/dryer and used PC Richard. They had the best price, and the installer was really professional and on time.

Drimmers is also worth checking out.

  4. Sears delivery is awful. Came 3 times before they could get the washer into the basement (first time refused to take it don thru coal hatch like they don’t know Brooklyn brownstones)

Get a front loader…there’s no reason that top loaders should even be selling by now. Less water use, less soap, less energy, easier on clothes…

  5. Drimmer’s in Coney Island. Old-timer style local business. They have the best prices and excellent delivery service. Not sure about Saturday delivery, but I’ve been very happy with their service – PC Richards is not bad but I’d give Drimmers the edge for big appliances.

  6. I have also used PC Richard many times. They are wonderfully organized and will deliver within a few-hour window you specify. They deliver on Saturdays and I think maybe Sundays too. I have been really pleased with their service. Not every outlet of theirs has everything they carry online. You will see more options at their bigger showrooms.

    There’s a Sears in Queens.

  7. I have a front loading kenmore elite, which i LOVE. It’s a high efficiency, with steam cycle, and all sorts of other fancy settings. Got it at Sears. I can’t remember the actual details, but I remember the sales person recommended that my husband *not* get delivery through them… he said it was overpriced, and it would be cheaper if we rented a truck ourselves. We borrowed a friend’s truck, but it was such a PITA (we had to take the door off it’s hinges to get the thing into our basement) that it might have been worth the delivery charge. We did not have sears do the installation because our place was getting totally re-plumbed and wired, so we just had our electrician and plumber take care of it.

My clothes get 100% cleaner than they used to at the coin-op. Also, it has a gentle cycle so I can wash my “dry-clean” only cashmere in the washer and no longer have to hike to the dry cleaner’s.

  8. goto 18th ave and 63rd st. there is two on the block. you could get very good deals. just negotiate and deal in cash. work one against the other.

  9. I can vouch that PC Richard will deliver on a Saturday. They installed my washer and dryer. And from what I remember I bought them in the middle of the week and they delivered that Saturday.
