Thought it would be worth a post to see where other Brownstoners go for helping hands. We have tons of small things to do in the house –all of which–if left to our own devices–would eventually get done…one day but which we would prefer to get done in the foreseeable future. Thus we are looking for someone to paint, tile a small closet and do the other odds and ends that need to get done along with us. Eseentially we are looking for a third pair of hands that we would pay by the day. No skill actually required as we know how to do all the stuff that is left ourselves. Any recs appreciated.

  1. We have occasionally used day laborers from a church and rehab program in Bushwick. Some of them are pretty skilled. They are all very nice. However, most speak hardly a word of English, so if your Spanish is as non-existent as mine, it could be difficult to communicate.

  2. There are always men waiting outside Home Depot looking for work for the day. I’ve seen contractors pull up in a pick up and three or four of them will jump in the back.

  3. email me at westgate63@yahoo.com. I have someone who actually is very skilled but needs work right now. He will work on a per diem that is very very reasonable. He has worked for me for over ten years and for many Brownstoners, so he has plenty of references.
