Wondering people’s thoughts on whether or not brownstone Brooklyn – specifically Bed Stuy and surrounding area – would benefit from a business that would offer a sort of brownstone lifestyle store that would be run out of our home on an appointment-only basis to keep costs down. We would offer things like decorative mouldings such as ceiling medallions, paint removal rentals, furniture refinishing, high-end re-upholstery, etc.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

  1. Perhaps do the retail aspect of your business as a booth at Brooklyn Flea. Great way to establish a brand and get word out. you could have small booklets to hand out about your appointment-only services.

  2. Oh, that sounds really nice.

The antique stores seem to offer a mix of selvage building parts and reupholstered pieces (at very good prices). Maybe they offer upholstery services too. I don’t know. I highly doubt they offer rentals of the silent paint remover.

  3. I like the idea – happy to be a test case for you, if you want to get the ball rolling – as I am in restoration frustration mode right now!

  4. We have a guy that has refinished a lot of our furniture that we have in our house. My husband does store design for a very high-profile, global, luxury retailer and our refinisher has done big projects for my husband’s employer. He’s either built and done custom installations or refinished things for them. His English is not great which is why we would be the face of this aspect of the business. He does impeccable work and we’ve trusted some extremely rare and very valuable pieces with him.

  5. DIBS – the idea is to initially run this as a home-based/web business to keep costs down. I’m not looking so much to profit from this as I am to serve the community as a frustrated home owner who wishes there was a one-stop place to get anything needed for a brownstone or similar. If it ends up really taking off, I would certainly be open to looking at retail space which would be great so I could offer an architectural salvage consignment shop, so to speak.

  6. bstonebrooklyn…something like this might be a great use of one of those storefronts on Lewis Ave that are in such rough shape.

  7. OP here –

Mopar – yes, thinking about offering for rent the silent paint remover. Also, when you say that there are two antique stores in Bed Stuy that offer something similar – what do you mean? Re-upholstery and refinishing of furniture? Silent paint remover rental? Selling mouldings?

Thanks and look forward to more opinions on whether this is something that is needed in the area or other products that readers, as home owners, wish they had easier access to.

  8. Hmmmm…..yes, I think so.

FYI there are two antique stores in Bed Stuy that might offer something similar. Not sure.

What’s a paint removal rental? You mean like heat gun or silent paint removal rental?
