We’d like to install an A/C in a rear window on our groundfloor level (the tenant’s apt). But there are (possibly original) iron bars on both windows. Is there a way we can install the A/C and preserve the tenant’s safety and the old bars? Ideally, given the lack of light at this level, we’d like to be able to remove the A/C in the colder months too, and put back in some kind of security. Thanks,
Gwen

  1. when the a/c is not there, the hinged section closes flish with the rest of the bars, and there’s a padlock thingy to prevent it opening. TO insert the a/c, you hinge it up, and it rests on top of the a/c. I use a couple od screws on the a/c to keep it safe, but I suppose a determined burglar couuld just shove it in by force, but I’m not worried.

If 7000 btu is enough, LG makes a neat low-profile a/c. Still have to have a bump or whatever, but can be much smaller.

Panasonic used to make almost noise-free a/cs but have not for several years.

  2. Thanks for all.

CMU, do the hinges not compromise the security of the bars? I like that idea.

I also get that I should see the unit before making a decision in case I don’t even have to.

  3. I had a Panasonic ac that did not project very far out the window. It worked for the front window with original bars. It was a few years ago.

  4. I had a section of the bars, big enoughn for the a/c, cut and reinstalled as a hinged-up gate. Installed a lock when the a/c was out, and it looks better than most bump outs.

  5. I know they make bars with a bump-out for an AC… the elegant ones are curved, or, like we had a bumped out rectangle.

I’m not a builder but can’t imagine how you’d install a window AC otherwise. Maybe they make a super flat one??
