We need to cool a room at the top of the house that has only a skylight — no windows. It faces the street in a landmarked district, and we don’t want to go through the process of getting a permit to put an A/C in the wall or even a hole for a portable air conditioner duct. How can we seriously cool this room (my son sleeps in it)?

Thanks,
Gwen

  1. Of course, you could ignore landmarks and just put in a wall unit, it’s more efficient than the portable. Else you can put in a roof vent for the portable before they find out.

  2. Yes, you can. There are A/C units that are floor portable that look like big rectangle air-purifiers. It’s used for rooms without windows and they work well. The only down side and it is a big one is – all the moisture the unit exacts from the air is collected in a big bucket in the unit and every so many hours it fills up and you have to carry it and dump it.

    You can google for it.

  3. purely from the thermodynamic rules you cannot cool the room without heating up something else. So you need a vent.

    – you can get split unit with one part sitting on the roof and another part in the room.

    – you can get portable AC and build vent though the roof.

    – you can get water cooled unit and run water though it.

  4. yes, get a operable skylight but do get one with an external sunshade. Open it at night, close it during the day….

no real need for AC in this part of the world…if you know how to work with the climate.
