Ideas for Room Dividers
Wondering if people have some ideas. We have a very large bedroom (21 feet by 14) with four windows along two walls (that meet- ie a corner building). I really want to come up with a way to separate out some space for an office/work area, I was wondering about building a “fake” wall, not…
Wondering if people have some ideas. We have a very large bedroom (21 feet by 14) with four windows along two walls (that meet- ie a corner building). I really want to come up with a way to separate out some space for an office/work area, I was wondering about building a “fake” wall, not up to the ceiling, or something that would not create a third tiny “closet” room but would allow for a sense of another space. I have thought of glass panels, or something, but just wondering if people have any ideas of types of walls or how others might have done it. Or even recommendations of someone I could consult with for ideas (not sure I want to go for a whole architect due to finances, but a consult of some such to help me come up with the best solution)
I’ll second DH’s recommendation to go with the Ikea ‘Expedit’ version of the West Elm book cases. I have three of them and love them. Just as sturdy, just as handsome, and MUCH CHEAPER.
Check out http://www.orientalfurniture.com for the shoji screens.
The West Elm bookcases are nice – but the Ikea ones are just as nice (IMO) and are half the price and double the size.
Park Sloper – where did you find Shoji screens that are so inexpensive? I was shopping around for some a few months ago and didn’t see much for under $300.
I actualy have three, approx. six-feet tall shoji screens available if you want them! (I don’t need them anymore, now that I installed the temporary pressure walls.)
They look like the picture at the link (http://bk.ly/rwH), with white wood frames. (I don’t have the stands that are featured in the link that Rosy provided; you’d have to buy them separately.)
One has three panels (original cost: $109.00), one has five panels (original cost: $169.00), and one has six panels (original cost: $199.00). Each panel measures approx. 71″ tall and 17.25″ wide. Great condition.
You just need to come with your car to pick them up sometime on the weekend, otherwise they’re going out on the curb next week. I live in the North Slope. Let me know if you’re interested.
Those West Elm book cases are perfect. I know of someone who divided an entry, kitchen and living room with just one. Looked great.
Check out this website. Great stuff and very reasonable. You can really create something very nice.

The shoji screens are made with rice paper and will let the light through. Lite weight and beautiful.
I recently looked into both sliding glass doors (http://www.slidingdoorco.com) and modular room dividers (http://www.idividewalls.com). Both are attractive solutions that let in some light. I eventually went with temporary pressure walls instead (http://www.manhattanpressurizedwalls.com), which worked for me as I was separating out a larger space on my garden level, and was actually cheaper than either of the other solutions — but wouldn’t work if you don’t want to go all the way up to the ceiling (and neither would the sliding doors, for that matter). But the modular room dividers from idividewalls.com would work perfectly, as you can decide how far up you want the clear or translucent panels to go.
If you like the idea of a bookcase room divider (which might be perfect in a home office, as it will give you instant storage), I recommend either the famous Ikea Expedit (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00071356) or a similar bookcase finished on both sides from West Elm or Crate and Barrel.
The storage Cargar is talking about:

West Elm sells these great wall units (for lack of a better word), which are comprised of square cubby holes, open on either side, and each unit is on industrial-sized casters. They are rows of cubes, available in various sizes. I was considering buying the largest size, at least 4 rows high and 4 or 6 across I think. It would let light from the windows through to the bedroom from the office portion of the room, and it would give you great storage and display space on both sides. I’d post a link, but I can’t discreetly open the catalog right now!
