Wondering if people have some ideas. We have a very large bedroom (21 feet by 14) with four windows along two walls (that meet- ie a corner building). I really want to come up with a way to separate out some space for an office/work area, I was wondering about building a “fake” wall, not up to the ceiling, or something that would not create a third tiny “closet” room but would allow for a sense of another space. I have thought of glass panels, or something, but just wondering if people have any ideas of types of walls or how others might have done it. Or even recommendations of someone I could consult with for ideas (not sure I want to go for a whole architect due to finances, but a consult of some such to help me come up with the best solution)

  1. A great idea for a translucent room divider would be to use old window panes. I’ve seen this before at someones house and in the movie High Fidelity. Specifically when John Cusack is in one of his old girlfriends apartments, she is using it to divide her bedroom from the living room.

You would need to find older distressed windows panes, paint them, and link then up using chain hanging from the ceiling such as those seen here:

Just be sure you’re drilling into a ceiling joist… Just a thought.

  2. thanks everyone. I like the idea of the IKEA book shelves. I am still thinking through some sort of translucent room divider as well. hard to know….

  5. I defer to Snappy and DH on the Ikea vs. West Elm version of the shelving. I mentioned West Elm only because that was the brand with which I’m familiar. To me, the point is the concept more than the particular source.

  6. we also use a huge Ikea ‘Expedit’ bookcase (5 x 5) to separate our bedroom into two spaces. it’s exactly what we needed. because the unit is so deep, you can actually use both front and back as bookcases, doubling your storage (depending on how big your books are obviously).

if you don’t want to use both sides as bookcases (or want a more interesting and wall-like visual effect) you could add a “backing” of some sort to one side. i considered attaching a piece of fabric or panel with an interesting design to one side for a nice visual effect, but decided not to (we had too many books to lose the two-sided approach, and we needed to let some light pass through).
