Hey there, looking for some opinions on the A/C units like the ones featured here:

We’re moving into the parlor level of a brownstone soon, and were thinking of installing these. Has anyone done this? Is it going to be crazy expensive to install? Do you need to rip up your walls and set up extra plaster to surround the piping system? Any tips/stories/warnings/rec’s would be much appreciated!

  1. It is unclear if you have purchased an apartment or are rental tenants.

Installation of a minisplit unit (single) require the installation of an outdoor condenser. there are length limitations on the line set that connects the outdoor condenser to the interior evaporator. Ballpark is 35′, and more across (not all up and down). Non-combustible location, and will need power, 220V.

The perforation of the masonry wall would be about 4″ in diameter. The interior evaporator does not necesarily need to be mounted on an exterior wall, but the coppper tubing must be concealable.

In addition there will need to be a hose for the draining of condensation, which will need to be sloped downward, so unlike a line set it cannot go over an obstacle. It can probably drain into a gutter leeder or drain onto a patio. Or it can be plumbed into indoor waste lines.

Units, let’s say 18,000 BTU’s are $2200.00 for parts, plus install. All installs are unique, but that’s a ball park.

They are quiet, comfortable, and economical, but ROI may take some time.
